A Fresh Take on Marine Audio
Our latest project involved upgrading the audio system of a Premier SunStation 230 pontoon. The initial consultation revealed a mix of issues and opportunities. The boat’s existing audio system, while decent with a Rockford Fosgate head unit and a five-channel amp, had room for improvement. We identified a minor issue with the radio’s switch and saw an opportunity to enhance the system further.
The pontoon already had a solid setup with Rockford Fosgate components, including two front speakers, two rear speakers, and a subwoofer. However, our clients wanted to add external speakers for enhanced audio during family activities. They also needed a system that allowed for independent control of the inside and outside audio.
Enhancing Audio Control: Inside vs. Outside
To address the need for precise audio control, we replaced the existing radio with a Kenwood Exelon XM500. This upgrade provided three sets of 5V pre-outs, allowing for independent volume control of the inside and outside speakers. This feature is particularly beneficial in various scenarios:
- Comfort for Adults: When the adults are relaxing inside the pontoon, they can enjoy a quieter and more comfortable environment. By adjusting the volume of the inside speakers to a lower level, they avoid the need to crank up the volume just to enjoy music while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere inside the boat.
- Fun for Kids: For children swimming or playing on a floating lily pad, having the outside speakers at a higher volume ensures they can enjoy their favorite tunes without the sound being blasted from the inside speakers. This setup allows for a balanced audio experience where the kids can hear the music clearly while the adults inside can maintain a more subdued audio environment.
- Socializing at the Sandbar: When the boat is anchored at a sandbar, the forward-facing speakers come into play. The external speakers positioned to fire forward create a vibrant atmosphere for socializing and enjoying music with friends. This feature is perfect for turning your boat into the life of the party, as it provides clear and powerful sound that can be heard from the shore or other boats.
Premium Sound and Lighting: Infinity Kappa Speakers
To elevate the audio experience, we installed Infinity Kappa marine speakers, renowned for their superior sound quality and durability. These high-end speakers are equipped with color-changing RGB lighting, which we carefully matched to the existing speakers on the pontoon. The RGB lighting adds a dynamic visual element to the audio setup, enhancing the overall ambiance and providing a cohesive look with the existing lighting.
The Infinity Kappa speakers deliver crystal-clear sound and feature rugged construction designed to withstand marine environments. The integrated RGB lighting not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also allows for customizable lighting effects to suit different moods and settings.
Powerful Performance: JBL Amplifier
To ensure optimal performance and power handling for the new speakers, we installed a JBL Club A754 amplifier. This marine-grade amplifier, part of JBL’s renowned Club series, is designed to deliver robust audio performance while withstanding the challenges of marine environments. The Club A754 amplifier provides the necessary power to drive the Infinity Kappa speakers effectively, ensuring a high-quality audio experience whether you’re cruising on the water or anchored at a sandbar.
