Sea Ray Audio Upgrade for Madison Lake Client

April 10, 2016 By Jeff Sweere Leave a Comment

Sea Ray AudioA client from Madison Lake came to Sweet Sounds with his 2006 Sea Ray 185 Sport boat looking to upgrade his marine audio system. We looked it over with him, listened as he explained his goals, offered suggestions and listened to products in our store with him. When finished with this process, we worked up a solution that best fit his needs.

    Sony Radio Offers Bluetooth Control

    Sea Ray Audio
Thanks to the ability to be controlled by a smartphone, the Sony radio can be safely stored in the glove box.

We began by replacing the head unit with a new one by Sony, the MEX-M70BT. It gives him easy control over all of his music stored on portable media devices and his smartphone. Since the factory location for the radio is in the glovebox, which is not very convenient, we chose this particular Sony model for its ability to be controlled over Bluetooth by his smartphone from the convenience of the driver’s seat. All he had to do was download a free Sony app from the App Store. Everything from volume to song selection is now handled by the phone, which sits conveniently on the Scosche Magic Mount we added to the vehicle.

    Memphis Power

    Sea Ray Audio
The compact Memphis marine amplifiers were a perfect match for this boat.

We added two amplifiers to the system to give it plenty of power. A Memphis MXA4.480 amplifier powers the cabin speakers off the front channels and the tower speakers off the rear channels. Doing this allows the client to play all of them or only one set, depending on his needs at the moment. A Memphis MXA1.500 amplifier powers the subwoofers. Our team made a custom composite amplifier panel to hold the speakers inside the storage compartment, and we used stainless hardware to mount everything securely. We securely loomed, soldered and heat-shrunk all of the wiring, and properly tied it all up to allow easy servicing in the future.

Big Sound From 8″ Memphis Speakers

    Sea Ray Audio
Two pair of 8″ Memphis speakers provide the cabin with great sound.

We installed two pairs of Memphis MXA82 8” coaxial speakers in the cabin in the same locations as the factory models. Since these speakers were noticeably bigger, we opened up the hole size, using a jig, to give us a perfectly round opening. Again, we used stainless hardware for the mounting.

    Sound For Wakeboarders

    Sea Ray Audio
Heat shrink tubing and techflex braided sleeving keep the wires going to the wake tower speakers safe.
    Sea Ray Audio
The Memphis wake tower speakers are designed to take the harsh environment of being mounted on the wake tower.
    Sea Ray Audio
The additional wake tower speakers let the passengers and boarders all enjoy the music.

We mounted a single pair of Memphis MM62TW tower speakers up high in the vehicle to project the music to people outside the boat.

Solid Bass Thanks To Memphis Subwoofers

    Sea Ray Audio
Beefy 10″ Memphis marine subwoofers look and sound great!
    Sea Ray Audio
Our attention to detail shows in every aspect of our work. The additional step of using a router bit to clean up the subwoofer hole is just one example.
    Sea Ray Audio
Bass from the 2 Memphis 10″ subwoofers filled this boat.

Any good audio system needs bass, so we added two Memphis MXA10D4 10” subwoofers underneath the rear seats, using the same installation methods as on the cabin speakers.
